Biology: photosynthesis and respiration side by side

Same molecules, opposite directions, different organelles. Learn the comparison, not the two processes separately.

Learning photosynthesis and cellular respiration as two separate topics doubles the memorization and misses the point. They are mirror images and belong on one comparison table.

Inputs: photosynthesis takes CO₂ and H₂O; respiration takes glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) and O₂.

Outputs: photosynthesis produces glucose and O₂; respiration produces CO₂ and H₂O. Yes, they are exact reverses of one another at the summary level.

Location: photosynthesis in chloroplasts (light reactions on thylakoid membranes; Calvin cycle in the stroma). Aerobic respiration in mitochondria (glycolysis actually in cytoplasm; Krebs in matrix; oxidative phosphorylation on inner membrane).

Energy currency: both use ATP and NADPH/NADH. Photosynthesis generates them from light; respiration generates ATP by consuming them.

Exam questions often ask about conditions where only one process runs (dark for a plant, or in an animal cell). Once you can hold the comparison in one image, these questions become one-step.
